Air Duct Cleaning FAQ — Phoenix, AZ

Common questions from homeowners in Phoenix and the surrounding area. If your question isn't here, call us and we'll give you a straight answer.

How often should Phoenix ducts actually get cleaned?

Most houses here land in the three-to-five year window, which is tighter than what you'd see in a milder climate. Blame the run time: cooling season stretches March through October, so the blower is pushing air six to eight months a year, and the same air handler and duct path carry the short winter heating load. Add monsoon haboobs from July through September and fine Sonoran Desert silt working in through attic penetrations, and the loading adds up faster. If you've had remodel work, a rodent problem, or you've never had it done, the clock doesn't apply.

Walk me through the job from the time you arrive.

We look at the system first: what's in the attic or on the roof, how many supplies and returns, what shape the flex runs are in. Then we seal off registers, connect a negative-air machine to the trunk or the air handler cabinet, and put the duct system under vacuum so nothing we knock loose lands in your living room. Rotating brushes and compressed-air whips run through each branch, pulling debris back toward the collection unit. We finish with the return drops, the blower compartment, and the coil face where we can reach it, then walk you through before-and-after photos.

How much of my day does this take?

A single-system 1970s stucco ranch with eight or ten vents usually runs two to three hours. Two-story tract homes out on the valley fringe with two systems and twenty-plus registers often go four to six. Central and midtown slump-block houses can surprise us when there are original under-slab runs, because those take slower, more careful work than attic flex. We give you a time estimate once we've counted the openings, and we tell you on the spot if it's turning into a longer job.

Why do two houses on the same street get different numbers?

Opening count is the biggest driver, followed by how many separate systems feed the house. Access matters a lot in Phoenix: a rooftop gas-pack or heat pump with short exterior duct drops is straightforward, while a low-clearance attic in 115-degree July heat is slower and harder on the crew. Original sheet metal trunks and under-slab runs in the older central stock need different tooling than 1990s flex. Heavy post-monsoon dust loading, past water intrusion, or rodent activity also changes the scope. We look at all of that in person and tell you the number before we touch anything.

Will you be moving my furniture around or leaving dust behind?

We move light pieces off a register if we have to and put them back. Heavy furniture, we'd rather you point us at it ahead of time so we can plan around it or get help. Drop cloths go under every work area, corner guards go on doorways where hoses run, and the vacuum stays on the duct system the whole time so debris travels into the machine instead of the room. We vacuum the work areas before we leave. If we make a mark, we tell you rather than hoping you don't notice.

How do I know if it's my dryer vent or my HVAC causing the problem?

Go by where the symptom shows up. Clothes taking two cycles, a hot laundry room, or a scorched smell near the dryer points at the dryer vent, which is its own duct with its own run to the exterior. Weak airflow at bedroom registers, dust settling a day after you clean, or longer cooling cycles points at the HVAC side. The two don't share ductwork, so one being clean tells you nothing about the other. We check both while we're there and tell you which one needs attention.

What happens if you find mold in the system?

We stop and show you. Growth in Phoenix usually traces back to a specific water source, most often a plugged condensate drain, a sweating line set in an attic, or a flex run damaged during monsoon roof leaks. Cleaning the duct without fixing that source just resets the clock. We document what we see, explain whether it's surface debris or something that needs a remediation contractor, and we don't push testing or chemical fogging you don't need. Fixing the moisture comes first, then the duct work.

Do you put in a new filter while you're there?

Yes, and we'd rather you let us. Pushing clean air through a loaded filter wastes most of what we just did. We stock common sizes for Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, Rheem, and American Standard equipment, including the deeper media cabinets a lot of valley-fringe tract homes use. If yours is an odd size we don't carry, we'll pull the old one, write down the exact dimensions and the direction of airflow, and tell you what to buy. During spring olive, mulberry, ash, and Palo Verde pollen, plan on checking it monthly.

Could someone come out before the end of the day?

Often, yes. We hold slots open on each day's schedule for calls that come in that morning. Summer is our heaviest stretch and the days after a big dust storm fill up quickly, so earlier calls have better odds. Tell us the cross streets and roughly how many vents the house has and we can say right away whether today works or whether tomorrow is the honest answer.

Which parts of the valley do you cover?

Phoenix proper and the surrounding Salt River Valley floor, roughly 1,100 ft elevation, in the hot desert BWh climate everyone here lives with. That takes in central and midtown with the postwar slump-block and burnt-adobe ranches, the 1970s and 80s stucco ranch neighborhoods, and the newer two-story tract stucco out toward the fringe. Every one of those is slab-on-grade with no basement, so we're working attic flex, sheet metal trunks, or rooftop packaged units. Call with your address and we'll confirm you're in range before we book anything.
